This past weekend I attended the well renowned (well especially in the CrossFit world), the Kelly Starrett Mobility Certification. I was very intrigued and excited to attend, but I had no idea of what I was about to embark on.
Not only is Kelly an amazing physical therapist who has worked with professional, collegiate, Olympic, and CrossFit athletes (to name a few), he is charismatic and brings a sense of energy that makes you want to get better.
As my pen hit the pad, I felt like I was going to start a fire with my paper because my pen was moving at such a rapid pace. What he was saying was so exciting and opened up my eyes to a world that I had seen but not yet fully committed too.
I got to witness the world’s top athletes in all sorts of “wrong” positions, and with just a few simple tweaks not only were they in great positioning they were killing their sport and feeling great in the process!
Kelly had a great point that really resonated with me. We as athletes and trainers have the ability to make simple changes in our training (i.e add about 10-15 minutes of mobility a day) and really prevent injuries and keep up working to our functional capacity for many years to come.
The funniest part of the day is when we lied on a lacrosse ball for 30 minutes and I felt more pain and sweat than I have in a WOD in months.
Mobility is not fun, but it is necessary. I look at it like this, deal with 10 -15 minutes of pain now and feel great for a lifetime….
or don’t and have nagging injuries and possible life threatening ailments that will affect you in years to come!
Here is a great link on how to get started on the Mobility Wod …..
