When Aunt Flow comes to visit, it can be very exhausting, annoying, and throw you out of your routine. Between cramps, bloating, lack of energy, and cravings it can be a brutal couple of days to a week.
Here are some helpful food items to help you feel good and replenish your body during this time.
# 1 Foilage (such as spinach, kale, etc) – Foods like spinach, kale, collard greens and swiss chard are the best when you are having your cycle because they are filled with iron, which gets lost when you are menstruating. You can eat them in salads or sauté them, throw them into a smoothie, or make some chips (which is the perfect salty treat when its that time of month).
# 2 Avocados – Rich with potassium and good fat loaded with B6 vitamins that help relieve cramping and are also packed with potassium which helps reduce water retention and bloating. Try eating an avocado a day during your cycle, either blended up in a smoothie, slice up over your “leafy greens”, or just eat it on it’s own!
# 3 H20 – Even though we don’t “eat” water typically, It’s important all the time! Especially during menstruation: by remaining hydrated, chances of the body retaining water decrease and painful bloating subsides. Hot water (with some lemon) also relaxes muscles, which can reduce cramping.
# 4 Salmon – Salmon is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which play an important role in relaxing your muscles and steadying your nerves. This will help to deal with cramps and crankiness. If you don’t like fish reach for walnuts or avocados which are also full of Omega-3’s. My favourite dish to eat when I have my period is grilled salmon with a squeeze of fresh orange juice and rice sauteed with spinach and kale.
# 5 Sunflower Seeds – This is the Midol of super food! “menstruation cramp relief” vitamin, Vitamin E,is found in sunflower seeds so eat away! Zinc has been said to help relieve belly bloats and pains during our cycle. Sunflower seeds are also an excellent source of vitamin B6, which is said to support the absorption of zinc and magnesium, assisting in natural pain relief.
Now you have the super foods to make Aunt Flows Visit the most enjoyable one yet!
