The opening games started Friday evening. As we were watching each country march thru the arena you see the smiles on these athletes faces as the entered. Chris (my husband) and I were chatting about how much work went into those smiles to get Pyeongchang.
Do you ever think about what it takes to get to be an olympic athlete … What do they eat, how do they train, how do they recover etc?
When researching it was surprising to me that one of the aspects that is most important to these athletes is recovery!
The train hard and in return they need to make rest a priority too.
Their recovery consisted of a lot of the same things ….
Stretching in the morning upon waking up whether it be a yoga practice, mobility, or mindful movement.
Eating a daily balanced diet consisting of high protein, low sugars, healthy fats, and veggies. You forget that nutrition is a huge part of
Drinking at least 80 ounces of water a day.
Stretching and meditation before bed.
The recovery process is all about prevention and correction. To recover in the correct manner means to be able to perform and practice to the best of your ability. So obviously this is why it is a must for these athletes. Performing to their full potential means they are meeting or exceeding the standards of their sport and feeling healthy the whole way through.
So the next time you don’t think it’s “necessary” for a recovery day, look to these athletes and if they need it you probably do too!
