Why are people bored?
We have technology, television, and entertainment right at our fingertips so how could we possibly even use the word bored?
90% of people experience boredom at some point in their daily lives. Men being generally more bored than women.
T The average attention span for the notoriously ill-focused goldfish is nine seconds, but according to a new study from Microsoft Corp., people went from 12 seconds to now 8 seconds before they loose concentration.
So what could possibly cause all this boredom?
- Monotony of the mind: Repetition and lack of interest in the details. Any experience that is predictable and repetitive becomes boring to our brains.
- Lack of flow: Tasks that are too easy are boring. When there is no spontaniety in your day, it gets monotonous.
3. Need for Novelty: People with a strong need for novelty, excitement, and variety are at risk of boredom. Extroverts in particular tend to get bored easily.
4. Paying Attention: Boredom is linked to problems with attention. What bores us never fully engages our attention. After all, it is hard to be interested in something when you cannot concentrate on it. People with chronic attention problems tend to be bored easily.
5. Emotional Awareness: An inability to know what will make one happy can lead to a more profound existential boredom. Not knowing what we are searching for means that we lack the capacity to choose appropriate goals and in return leaves you bored.
- Inner Amusement Skills: If there is an absence of inner amusement skills, the external world will always fail to provide enough excitement and novelty to avoid boredom.
7. Lack of Autonomy: People feel boredom a lot when they feel trapped. And feeling trapped is a big part of boredom.
- The role of Culture: No boredom existed until the industrial revolution … before that our ancestors had to spend most of their days securing food and shelter, boredom wasn’t an option. Now our culture gets the quick fix and is right on to the next. When there is no NEXT we get “bored”.
