It is crazy to think it is already November. The holiday season is vastly approaching and most of us start to loose site of our goals with the craziness around us (i.e christmas shopping, holiday events,
I encourage everyone to take a few moments to set some personal goals for the holiday season. These goals should be designed to help you stay on track when you find yourself faced with temptation.
Studies show that the average person gains 7 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas and here’s the kicker …. They NEVER loose the weight!
So how can we stay on track without feeling like we are missing out on all the fun …
Start by using the S.M.A.R.T acronym :
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Relevant
- Time Specific
Set your workouts up like appointments :
You wouldn’t avoid work because of a holiday event, or skip picking the kids up from school due to holiday shopping so take the professional approach the same way with your workouts. Make it an appointment; this really helps to have a friend (s) or hire a personal trainer i.e. someone to keep you accountable and help keep your fitness on track!
Bring Healthy Snacks:
Snacking and office goodies are one of the most difficult to avoid, so make sure to have healthy choices around and find ways to make healthier versions of the things you love this time of year.
Don’t stress out:
Many of us indulge in a little treat or two and then we beat ourselves up for it the rest of the day, week, season etc .. This is actually doing way more harm to your overall health and wellness than the cupcake you consumed earlier in the week. We are human and its all about balance. I always use a little trick and take a moment before I grab and think “Is this what I really want”? and a lot of times it’s not I am just hungry, bored, enamored by the look of the treat etc.. sometimes it is worth it and then I eat it move on and go about my day make the normal healthy choices I would eat.
Choose a Challenge:
Challenges are great ways to stay focused during the holiday season. At our gym CPMFITness we participate in a 30 day rowing challenge that Concept 2 hosts. Run in a local race like a jingle bell run or turkey trot. This way you are focused on goals that are beneficial for you and you are seeing results in the process!
While the holidays are a time to celebrate, have fun with family and friends, and relax a bit, It does not mean we have to put our health on the back burner.
