F.E.A.R. stands for “False Evidence Appearing Real
Wikipedia’s definition of fear:
“Fear is an emotion induced by a threat perceived by living entities, which causes a change in brain and organ function and ultimately a change in behavior, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events. Fear may occur in response to a specific stimulus happening in the present, or to a future situation, which is perceived as risk to health or life, status, power, security, or in the case of humans wealth or anything held valuable. The fear response arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat (also known as the fight-or-flight response), which in extreme cases of fear (horror and terror) can be a freeze response or paralysis.
Fear is a natural state. We all live in fear in some point of our lives You may fear heights, or spiders, or new situations, or rejection–whatever your fears may be, you can either let those fears form boundaries beyond which you can’t move or grow, or you can face them head-on and allow them to become opportunities to move into new places in your life. The choice is definitely yours.
First Acknowledge what your scared of and why …
Most of us have these “unrealistic” thoughts in our brain of what is reality and what is fantasy and this is very prevalent in our fears. When you write down what you are scared of why you are scared of it and what you can do to overcome your fears it will sometimes reveal that our fear is not as scary as we had envisioned in our heads. It also gives us a plan of attack on how we are going to conquer this fear and move on from it.
#2 Measure Your Fears: I read a great article on fear from Tony Robbins and he talks about the “Rocking Chair Test” as a good measure to get over your fears as well. He said imagine yourself as 80 years old, sitting on your rocking chair, and you didn’t do whatever it is where fear is holding you back. If it doesn’t bother you, then don’t do it. But, if you feel like you missed out, and you regret not doing it, then go for it.
#3 Sometimes Failures Lead to Our biggest Success – When you fail you can learn and grow from it. Fear can shape you and prepare you for your next big endeavor. I look at my life and I have never let failure get the best of me. Sometimes the fall hurts more than I would like, but I have always dusted myself off and looked fear in the eyes and ran for it. When you do that you will always be running for something not away from it.
