Going to a new yoga class can be very intimidating especially if you have never experienced it first hand. Here are some tips and tricks to make your yoga experience the best one yet!
Pick a Class That Fits Your Goals
Do some research before attending a class and read descriptions on the website or you tube or google the styles of yoga to see what description best fits your personality and your needs. If you are wanting something a bit more high intensity look for key words like “flow”, “Power”, and “Sculpt”. If you want more of an overall stretch seek out words like “restore” “rejuvenate”, and “stretch”.
Not Flexible Not a Problem –
No, you don’t have to be stretch Armstrong to do yoga. Know that going in this is your practice and don’t compare yourself to anyone else. We all were beginners once. In fact, one of the many benefits that regular yoga provides is increased flexibility and mobility. So the less flexible you are the more results you will see!
Focus on Your Breath
Breath plays a critical role in your yoga practice. Think of your breath as the guide through your practice. When you focus on the inhales and the exhales you are not as likely to get bored or have your mind wander. Breath will also help warm your body so that you are able to get deeper into your poses and get the most out of your yoga practice.
BYOM – (Bring your own mat)
Make sure to bring your own mat, small towel, and water bottle with you. Usually yoga studios do have mats to rent, but I always like having my own. They are inexpensive if you go to your local TJMAXX or Target they are around $10-$15. Also make sure to bring a small towel and water to your class.
Keep Going –
“I recommend sticking with it for at least 1 month. “That can help you get a really good feel for the classes that you like, and a good foundation of the basic movements and positions in yoga.
Now you will feel comfortable and ready for a yoga class near you! Or if you are in Sioux Falls Come to my class tonight at CPMFITness Downtown.
