For many women finding the perfect bra is more difficult than the workout!
For some we need a lot of support, others we like less support, built-in to our tops etc…
So here are some great tips to help finding the perfect sport’s bra for your sport.
1. Make sure you always try on your sports bra for yourself. It is great to get recommendations from friends in your specific sport, but just make sure to try them on to see that they are a great fit for you.
For example if you are a runner you might want to go to a running speciality store. Or look in the sections that pertain to your sport at a Sports Chalet or Dicks Sporting Goods.
2. For comfort go with organic soft material like from Lululemon… (my personal favorite), or Nike Dri Fit. If you get cheaper material, you are more likely to get irritation.
3. Make sure your straps are adjustable and sturdy for your sport. If you don’t get adjustable straps, I noticed that with wear and tear these tend to not last as long as the ones with sturdy adjustable straps. Under Armor and Fiona have great ones with adequate pricing as well.
4. Make sure you try on different brands and types to see what one works best for you. I always bring several brands into the dressing room so I can really get an accurate feel of what is best for me and my body. By doing this you will get to see different styles, fabric, material, cuts etc…. that fit best for your activity and body type.
5. Make sure the bra fits!!! There is nothing worse than a sports bra that leaves you too loose with extra bounce, or too tight cutting off circulation. Know that your bra should fit a bit snug and tight but not to an extreme of loss of breath! A good point of reference is if you can slide two fingers under your straps, it is probably a good match.
6. Also, while you are trying on your bras make sure to do a couple of movements or mimic actions that would take place while doing your sport. For example, if you are a crossfitter do a burpee, maybe a jump squat, or pushup to test for support.
7. Many of us with our busy schedules do not have time to go to an actual store and try all of these examples above. No worries, ordering online is ok too! Just make sure you order from companies such as: www.zappos.com, www.6pm.com, www.amazon.com, etc… all of these online stores allow you to return your items free of charge, and your shipping is usually free!
8. Last but not least, your sports bra holds no sentimental value, so don’t store it in your drawer for memories. You should really replace your sports bras after 70-80 washes. After this many the elasticity is worn, and your bra is not doing the job it should be. On the other hand, if your weight changes drastically; prepare! Don’t try to double up on the old big bras, buy some that fit! To make a sports bra keep its shape and durability, make sure to not dry them, and maybe even hand wash them. This will really prevent you from having to go purchase more.
Now that you have all of this useful information, we should all get out there and find a sports bra that suits our liking. We no longer have to be uncomfortable during our workouts!
