I have a client that was a key-note speaker at the University of Indiana’s School of Music. He was asked to prepare a little speech for some of the students in the program. He said he had learned a lot along the way, but the one thing he had realized is the reason he wasn’t in the exact place that he wanted to be …… is because
“HE WAS GETTING IN HIS OWN WAY”!
I have heard this phrase before, but this time it hit me right in the spot! It was my missing link the key to why I have not been 100% because I wasn’t committing to myself! Now if I couldn’t believe in myself and my abilities whole heartedly without a doubt, how was I expecting others to take me 100% seriously!
I feel a lot of times I make the road blocks for myself and then want to blame it on the situations around me, but really it’s ME!
Examples: I have been nursing a torn hamstring and some tears in my shoulder for a while now. I am upset that they hurt so badly and are inhibiting me from really getting to my full potential … OR AM I?
If I was so worried why I am I not icing 3 times a day? Why do I continue to do hundreds of squats, pushups, and workouts in general when I know what I should be doing is mobility, yoga, and 1 workout not 2 or 3! I am my road block! I know what I need to do but because of being to stubborn, lazy, or OCD I choose to not get out of my own way!
How many times have you had a really good idea or business opportunity, and a year two years, many years later you see someone with the same idea making millions; it is because they believed in themselves enough to try!
My husband talks about his high school basketball career pertaining to this! It was his dream, he ate, breathed, slept basketball (I am serious he slept with a basketball and named her Lucille). All he wanted was to make it! He would spend hours at the gym and when his friends were going out to parties on weekends he was running sprints, shooting free throws, or doing ball handling drills. He wanted it so badly, but didn’t believe in himself and his abilities enough to get him to where he wanted! He would choke come game time, or come practice time would not show the coaches his TRUE capabilities. He Road Blocked himself!
He always says if he would have been the person now that he was in high school he would have made it, but instead of focusing on the fact he didn’t make it he is focusing on using the eye of the tiger to get him to his passions and goals for his life now.
Day in and Day out year after year I have worked with clients on nutrition, health, and overall wellness. I have seen people get in their own way and tell themselves they can’t for fear of what will happen if they really can!
I have also seen people overcome this fear and this is by far the most rewarding part of the job! I have seen the most broken down people, get out of their way and become inspiring, positive, leadership driven examples to many!
So when you want to talk yourself out of something …. Don’t!
When you think you can’t, prove you can and will!
When you are scared …. just jump or you will never have the exhilarating experience of overcoming fear!
I heard a lesson that a life coach used to tell his clients to do. He told them to buy a journal and every night before they went to bed, they needed to write one positive thing about themselves and the next night the same and so on and so fourth. The guy that did this now has 4 full journals of inspiring positive things about himself that he reads day in and day out before bed. He is preventing himself from him, and I challenge you fit ones to block out the negative and replace it with positive! Grab a journal, do this exercise and see all the fantastic changes that will occur because of you!
I want you to write 3 positive attributes about yourself in your journal for the next 30 days, and see the positive effects that will take place because of it! Don’t be a road block pave your route!
